i thought this was a well written piece covering just 1 criteria to gauge the character of a program.
hope you don't mind, but i shared this with your friends in The Rivalry forum at PSR.
i think you could do a series of post that point out character at the 2 major SC football schools.
- record as far as disciplinary actions - lying to recruits, forcing recruits to stay with threats, etc. - head coaches professionalism in the media -etc.
For my whole life college sports fans in South Carolina have had their two Division 1 sports teams characterized by journalists who either come in from other places or those who benefit from squelching an honest voice.
The result of having interlopers covering the state's college sports has been a lack of insight and ability to correctly fathom reality.
The state's largest newspaper, The State, sets the tone for the way USC is covered, and that tone is negative along with a lot of fluff, that provides little worth reading.
Clemson, on the other hand, is let alone to operate, where not much is exposed about its sports programs, unless it is approved by the marketing professionals up there.
The same is true in the way the programs are assessed on the field. Clemson is not critiqued except with an "all is well" mentality, where the state's media turns all at USC into a "worst-case" scenario and then harps on the negative for days.
This blog hopes to deviate from the current norm.
